Cleaning Your Jewellery at Home

Cleaning Your Jewellery at Home

Regularly cleaning your jewellery is now more important than ever, as it ensures that it is free from germs and debris. Regular hand washing can also really take its toll on your jewellery, so it’s important to give it a little extra TLC.

The good news is, you probably have many of the ingredients you need to clean your jewellery at home. Everyone loves a good DIY!

Whilst we recommend a professional clean and polish every six months or so, there are a few things you can do to help your jewellery keep its shine for longer. In fact, you probably have most of the things you’ll need already in the house! Read on to find out more…

Cleaning Silver Jewellery

One way to shine up your silver at home is by using white wine vinegar and baking soda. In a bowl, simply mix half a cup of vinegar with two tablespoons of baking soda. Then, leave your jewellery to soak in the mixture for a few hours. After some time has passed, you will find that any tarnish sat on your piece will come off with a gentle rub with a microfibre cloth. You can buy great cloths that are designed especially for jewellery, in-store at Sonny’s!

Ensure that your jewellery is completely dry, and you’re good to go!

Whilst cleaning your jewellery at home can be very easy, it is important to avoid excessively rubbing your jewellery dry it after you’ve cleaned it. By using a rough cloth or rubbing too hard, you may scratch the surface and cause imperfections on your pieces. Therefore, we recommend only using a microfibre cloth when cleaning. This is because using anything harsher could cause scratches, particularly if your silver is soft.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for another type of product, or feel like there may be a different method that is better suited to you and your jewellery, then visit us in store! We stock a great range of professional products that are undoubtedly effective.

Cleaning Gold Jewellery

Whilst using baking soda to clean silver jewellery will prove to be very effective, it will not work with gold jewellery, and can even be damaging. Cleaning gold at home is simple – all you need is warm water and a mild dish soap! However, we do not propose using any other homemade solutions, as the gold in your piece can react to some cleaning solutions.

Again, take extra care and precautions if the metal is soft. You can do this by avoiding the use of rough brushes or cloths, which will prevent strain on, or damage to your jewellery.

Diamonds To Polish? Not A Problem…

Diamond jewellery can be cleaned using a soft-bristled toothbrush. This will allow you to delicately reach into the mount of a piece, which is often where germs and debris collects. As diamond jewellery is very precious, be sure to consider the appropriate safety precautions prior to cleaning your pieces. For example, ensure that the toothbrush you use does not have rubber bristles, as they can cause damage to diamonds. You will then be prepped to clean your treasures!

If you are due to book in your diamond guarantee with us, or if you would like a routine clean and polish, please get in touch, or feel free to call us on: 0121 236 2426. We will have your ring looking as good as new!
